911 Service was implemented in Tazewell County on April 23, 1997. The Communications Division (911 Center), a Division of the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office, an Accredited Virginia Law Enforcement Agency, is responsible for dispatching law enforcement agencies, fire departments, rescue squads, search & rescue, and emergency management throughout the county.
The Communications Division is comprised of the following Sworn Communications Officers under Sheriff Brian Hieatt and Captain Randy Ann Davis Director of 911 & Emergency Communications. The Communications Division processed on the average 100,000 emergency and non-emergency phone calls, and averages 42,000 incidents, and over 1,000,000 radio transmissions. The Communications Division is considered one of the largest and busiest Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) in Southwest Virginia.
The Communications Division is a highly progressive agency in the adoption of new technologies and services, recently first in our region with the implementation of Text 2 911 in Fall of 2019, also another first Tazewell County 911 Center now has direct radio communication support for all public school locations in Tazewell County. The Communication Division is a Virginia Accredited Emergency Medical Dispatch Communications Center, a Project Lifesaver participant, and is recognized by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children as a participant in the Missing Kids & 9-1-1 Readiness Project.
